🎸 Middies lands a number-one band for year two

Source: Middies Festival via Facebook
Middies named Skegss as its 2027 headliner on Friday. The Byron Bay band's album Rehearsal went to number one in Australia, and their song Up in the Clouds is double platinum.
Three locals started Middies to fill the gap left when the Wignalls music festival ended in 2020, after 24 years. Hundreds turned out under stormy skies for the first one in February.
Year two is Saturday 27 February, with Adelaide's George Alice, Surf Trash and Birdland also on the bill. Tickets are on sale now.
🍜 Ocean Beach's empty kiosk is finally getting a cafe

Source: Gin Lao Denmark via Facebook
Denmark councillors approved a lease for the Ocean Beach kiosk on 29 September. The Gin Lao food truck team wants it open as Ocean Beach Cafe by the summer holidays.
The kiosk next to the surf club has never opened, and a tender last year drew no one. The new tenants went for it after an email wrongly said it was for sale. A week later, they were in the Shire CEO's office.
There isn't enough power for a full coffee machine, so they'll do things a little differently, with Great Southern produce and their own Asian-inspired flavours.
🏆 83 finalists made the cut for the Business Awards

Source: ACCI via Facebook
Albany's Chamber of Commerce named its finalists on Friday for the 30th Great Southern Business Awards, picked from more than 150 entries.
Rustlers, Mrs Jones in Denmark and Katanning Firewood Services are on the list. Denmark Chocolate Company, Great Southern Seafoods and The Gardens at Bullimah are each up for three awards.
Five of the tourism finalists, including the Whaling Station, are also up for the WA Tourism Awards. The local winners are named at Retravision Stadium on Friday 6 November, and tickets are on sale now.

COMMUNITY DIGEST
👻 Ghost hunters spent 48 hours locked in Camp Quaranup
Paranormal crew Afterlife Party released the last of nine YouTube episodes from their Camp Quaranup lockdown on 4 October. The old quarantine station is better known these days for school camps.
They reckon they recorded a woman's voice saying "You shouldn't be here", and two of the crew lost their breath in the old second-class men's bathroom. Watch the trailer and decide for yourself.
🎸 Kojonup's Old Mervs still fence the farm between tours
Kojonup duo Old Mervs released their second album, Carparks, on 2 October. Their first went to number one in Australia, and they'll finish this year with 85 shows across Australia, the US and the UK.
Back home, Dave House and Henry Carrington-Jones still do the fencing, seeding and sheep work. "Kojonup is a fair chunk of who we are," Dave says.
🌳 Turner Road's upgrade is being redesigned to keep a 41m karri
Denmark councillors voted on 29 September to ask for a Turner Road design that keeps five mature karri. The biggest is 41m tall and an estimated 180 to 240 years old.
Ten of the 12 people who spoke at the meeting were there for Turner Road. The new design comes back to council after officers work through it with Main Roads.
🐑 Great Southern shearer Damien Boyle wins his 27th Royal Show title
Damien Boyle won a record 27th Open shearing title at the Perth Royal Show late last month. He first entered as an under-15 in 1996.
He grows wool for a living, and calls shearing "my sport I do on the weekends, basically". His advice for anyone starting out: "You just got to shear exactly what's right in front of you."
🍲 A chef who cooked for the All Blacks now serves free Friday dinners
Andrew Sherry, a former New Zealand executive chef who has cooked for the All Blacks, started serving free vegetarian dinners outside the Women's Rest Centre on York Street on Friday 2 October.
On the first night, he cooked enough for 100 plates for anyone doing it tough, and paid for it himself. "We're there and will be there every week," he says.
