COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
🚑 Albany's St John crew gets a purpose-built home base

Source: Laurie Benson via the Albany Advertiser
Albany's St John WA crew has moved into a new purpose-built sub-centre with 19 undercover ambulance bays, dedicated rest zones, first-aid training rooms, volunteer break areas and secure parking. This upgrade sets the team up for what's ahead.
District operations manager Toni Melia points out the facility is open to St John staff and volunteers from across the Great Southern. For anyone in the region who's ever had to call an ambulance, this is where the crew comes from. "Pop in and have a chat," she says.
🏆 Peter Bol headlines Albany's sporting night of the year

Source: Albany Advertiser via their website
Peter Bol is coming to Albany. The four-time 800m Australian champion and three-time Olympian headlines the Wellington and Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards at Retravision Stadium on Wednesday, 23 April.
Bol claimed his fourth national title at the Sydney national championships earlier this month and is locked in for Glasgow 2026. He won Commonwealth gold in Birmingham in 2022 and finished fourth at Tokyo.
Finalists across overall, senior, junior and masters categories will be announced ahead of the night. Organisers say the junior field is particularly strong this year.
🏘️ Denmark opens 7-hectare reserve to housing and aged care proposals

Source: Denmark Council via their website
Denmark Shire has voted 7-1 to call expressions of interest for a 7-hectare reserve on Research Station Avenue, with housing, aged care and health services all in the frame.
The Kwoorabup Community Park site sits close to the town centre and Denmark Hospital. Council was already fielding calls before the vote, with a community housing provider making contact in December and a health services group in July. Adjacent open space stays protected.
It's early days. But if it proceeds, it could add much-needed housing and aged care capacity right in the heart of town.

COMMUNITY DIGEST
⚓ PortFest draws 4,500 to celebrate 200 years of the Port of Albany
More than 4,500 people turned out for PortFest to mark 200 years of the Port of Albany, more than doubling Southern Ports' previous open day records.
Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Warramunga drew big crowds to the wharf. With ANZAC Day this Saturday, the port's role from the first ANZAC convoys through to today carries real weight.
🔍 Gnowangerup teen's sharp eye helped crack a pool break-in
Daniel McBlane spotted blurry CCTV cameras during work experience at the Gnowangerup Community Swimming Pool and fashioned a cleaning tool from a cloth and broom handle. The sharper footage later helped police identify culprits after a break-in.
The Shire presented Daniel, who turned up at the pool each Friday with his support worker, with a certificate for his initiative. He turned up each Friday. This time, it made a real difference.
🐴 Albany's light horse memorial and its place in the ANZAC story
Albany's Desert Mounted Corps Memorial on Mt Clarence honours the light horsemen who served in Egypt, Palestine and Syria from 1916 to 1918. Albany was the last piece of Australian soil many of them ever saw.
The replica was unveiled in 1964 after the original was destroyed in the 1956 Suez Crisis. The City of Albany has a full program of ANZAC Day commemorations on Mt Clarence this Saturday. Catch the full details in What's On below.
⛵ Obsession takes line honours as Fremantle to Albany race returns
The Fremantle to Albany ocean race returned this weekend after a six-year break, with Obsession claiming line honours in just under 44 hours as part of Albany's 2026 bicentenary.
Ken Court's 1993 record of 37 hours and one minute survived. Obsession finished nearly seven hours outside the benchmark, leaving the $10,000 prize unclaimed. Presentations are on tonight at Wilson's Brewing Co on Stirling Terrace. Worth swinging by if you're keen.
💍 Albany couple's shearing-yard proposal racks up 8,400 likes
Albany's Jayden Ralph may have pulled off the most regional proposal in WA history, faking a shearing mishap at the Williams Shearing Expo to get Jas Chamberlain on stage with a ring hidden in a towel.
Jas said she was still working out whether he was spurting blood or proposing when it clicked. No date set, but the wedding will keep the shearing theme.

WHAT’S ON
