COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

💡 Albany switches on the world's biggest light show

Source: Governer’s House WA via their website

Albany lit up its 200th birthday in record-breaking style over the weekend. Lighting the Sound illuminated 10 million square metres of coastline across Princess Royal Harbour, Torndirrup National Park and the Vancouver Peninsula, officially the largest light installation ever created.

Finnish artist Kari Kola (who's previously lit the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum and Stonehenge) co-designed the display with Menang Noongar elders. The concept, Roots of the Sky, draws on the bloodroot plant and stretches across 800 LED lights, 15 towers and 15km of shoreline.

Heavy rain couldn't keep the crowds away. Moorditj Nop dancers performed, Governor Dawson paid tribute to the bond between Menang people and Albany's early settlers, and the show continues for six more nights across the coming fortnight.

🏆 Albany Elder Carol Pettersen lands spot in WA Women's Hall of Fame

Albany's Menang-Gnudju Noongar Elder Carol Pettersen OAM JP has been inducted into the 2026 WA Women's Hall of Fame, recognised for more than four decades of service as a cultural educator, author, Justice of the Peace and Indigenous adviser.

At 84, Carol has spent her career championing Indigenous advocacy, justice, land care and mentoring. She was named the 2026 Annette Knight Community Citizen of the Year just weeks before the induction.

She's the only Great Southern representative among the 20 inductees. A proud moment for Albany and the region.

🐶 Wellstead farmer Courtney Moir wins Muster Dogs Season Four

Source: ABC Great Southern via Andrew Chounding

Four years ago, Courtney Moir was watching the first season of Muster Dogs from her couch near Wellstead and thought "I could do that." Last week, she and her border collie Blossom were crowned Season Four winners.

The 32-year-old moved to her husband's family farm from Albany just before her first child was born, and the transition hit hard. The former bank employee says dog handling became the thing that filled her cup and gave her an identity beyond motherhood and farm life.

Since the episode aired, she's heard from women all over Australia who get it. "I think other rural women understand that feeling of trying to find your own identity on a farm," she says. She and Blossom are already planning their next chapter in trials.
